Printable - College Loans From 2009 Recovery Act Promote Online Education

Author admin     Category small business     Tags

When President Obama proposed his Recovery Act in 2009, what many didn't realize is that it wasn't just focused on jobs. The act, which totals over $787 billion, is actually divided into three key sectors: Tax benefits, Contracts, grants and loans, and Entitlements. It's that second third, Contracts, grants and loans, that will have a major impact on online colleges. For many, college loans mean they can attend school, where on their own it was impossible.

"All along that education pipeline, too many people", he said in a speech last year, "are slipping through the cracks. It's not only heartbreaking for those students; it's a loss for our economy and our country."

One statistic President Obama wanted to seriously address is that only 29% of U.S. adults have a college degree, fewer than in many other industrialized nations. Only about 40% of Americans who start college graduate. The price of higher education, which rises by an average of 8% a year, contributes to the high dropout rate.

For example, in his first year of office alone, the President dedicated $500 million to have community colleges develop new online education programs. From there, he wants to have these courses available to all students who can get online, from their desktop to the new Amazon Kindle. Actually, what's truly amazing is he wants to see 20-25 new government-approved courses available per year.

One of the key reasons for this program is the overall affordability of online education versus on campus. The Board of Education estimates that online education costs a student approximately 40% less than going on campus. The average cost of an on campus education these days is $150,000 for a four-year degree, while USA Today reports the cost is $65,000 for the same amount of time.

Further, the report says, online education is no longer the domain of basket weaving easy courses and mass produced diplomas. Online academies offer courses that are every bit as thorough and competitive as going to a campus. Couple this with the cost saving element and one can easily see why President Obama is gung-ho on online education. By encouraging students to get equally competitive educations online, he's getting more students to school for each government dollar spent.

There are other cost factors going to school online has over on campus, and this is to assuage the dropout problem. Online students can hold down jobs, many times getting financial aid from companies like recognizable food chains, as they continue their education. The cost savings comes in the cut in commute time, possible baby sitter fees for working parents, and the wear and tear constant commuting does on vehicles.

Funding

More and more small business owners are looking at merchant cash advance as a viable source for operating capital and cash flow. Although, the economy is somewhat recovering from the worst downturn in the last 80 or so years, business lines of credit, especially loans for operating capital have all but dried up and disappeared. Not only the banks have tightened the reigns on handing out loans to small businesses, customers have also wisened up to the new realities of our time and have tightened up on the money belt. This is where merchant cash advance comes in.

What is a Merchant Cash Advance?

A merchant cash advance is different from a traditional small business loan. With a traditional small business loan there are many disadvantages such as lack of flexibility, long waits for approval, interest amounts, access to paid portion of the loan, possible binding covenants, and the fixed charge the bank usually requires. With a merchant cash advance, these issues are eliminated from the scenario. The application process is quick and you get access to the funding in as little as five days.

How does it work?

Basically, a merchant cash provider will purchase a percentage of your future Visa / Master Card / Amex / Discover / Diner receipts and advance those funds to you up-front. You use the money without restriction. The merchant financing provider then deducts a small percentage daily from your future credit card sales. There are no fixed monthly payments; instead a portion of your monthly credit card transactions is deducted until your advance is paid back.

What are the qualifications?

The main requirements for a merchant advance are to meet a certain amount of credit card transactions, since this is the form of repayment; to have been in business with credit report history for at least 12 months; and to have a premises lease with at least 12 months remaining.

What can you do with the money?

With a cash advance you can purchase new equipment, fund payroll, pay taxes, expand your marketing, purchase supplies, catch up on rent or other bills, take advantage of expansion opportunities or you can use the money for any other purpose - it's entirely up to you!
